They say that the cure for Love will make me happy and safe forever. And I’ve always believed them.

Until now.

Now everything has changed.

Now, I’d rather be infected with love for the tiniest sliver of a second than live a hundred years smothered by a lie.

Lena looks forward to receiving the government-mandated cure that prevents the delirium of love and leads to a safe, predictable, and happy life, until ninety-five days before her eighteenth birthday and her treatment, when she falls in love.

First off, I just want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main character, Lena, is so well-developed. I loved that Oliver decided to make Lena one of the “sheep” of her community at first instead of a rebellious teen with something to prove…instead, she used her best friend, Hana for that role instead. As a reader, you got to see Lena really taken the blindfold off of her eyes and take the cotton out of her ears so that she could see her dystopian world for what it really was…a monster that needed to be put down.

When I read the premise of the book, I was a little put off…I was wondering how an author could create a world where love was a dangerous, deadly thing, but after reading only a few chapters…that nightmare seemed like a very real possibility. Oliver’s use of medical terminology, symptomology, historical references, and the introduction of the Book of Shh concerning amor deliria nervosa was absolutely ingenious.

Alex was also a mysterious, yet well-developed character that had so much depth that I was willing him to exist in real life. The love that blooms between Alex and Lena is so beautiful and innocent that it felt like the first new green blade of grass poking up out of the soil after a horrific forest fire. It was pure and simple in their own secret world of the abandon houses, but society made it forbidden and dangerous. With Lena’s quest to find out what really happened to her mother, the knowledge that Invalids and their world exist on the other side of the government’s fences, AND that the countdown until her treatment is loudly ticking by…you’ll be on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens. I will tell you one thing I am incredibly glad of…there WILL BE a second installment! I didn’t know that at the time I finished this book, and was in tears because of the ending and the thought that I wouldn’t get to see what happened next…thankfully…there will be more!

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves love or just needs a great dystopian novel in their lives. I definitely plan on making this book a part of my re-read pile because it was just THAT GOOD.
